While getting a rolling office chair may seem to be coming with a long list of benefits, it comes with some downsides though, which are usually overlooked. One of the biggest ones is that the wheels of the chair may end up damaging the floor. While it also depends on the type of hardwood floor you have, almost all the ones are prone to it.
So without further ado, let’s get into what you can do to prevent your office chair from damaging your hardwood floor.
Area rugs are believed to be one of the most convenient ways of protecting your hardwood floor from an office chair. It’s usually also visually appealing so that’s always a plus too.
You can simply place the rug under your chair. Unless it’s too coarse, it should allow your chair’s wheels to move freely, without letting them come in contact with your hardwood floor.
Usually, area rugs are large enough to allow you to move your chair comfortably. Furthermore, they may even protect the floor from your desk or other objects.
Now though area rugs are relatively inexpensive, depending on the size and quality, they may cost quite a bit.
It’s also recommended to clean the area before placing the rug on the floor. It helps prevent debris and other such agents from damaging your floor. Similarly, if the rug is coarse or rough, you may want to use something soft like a non-slip pad underneath it to ensure the floor doesn’t get damaged in any way.
Chair mats or floor mats seem to be a common alternative to area rugs. They are specifically designed to protect the floor from your office chair so they may not disappoint on that front.
However, they are relatively smaller, and hence, inexpensive. But that also means that your chair’s movement may be limited, and it may not even protect your floor from desk or other objects, unless you get more than one of them.
Using a cardboard
Well, this one might sound a little weird, but it’s probably a better option in some situations.
Firstly, if you’re on a very tight budget, getting a large rug or even a quality chair mat may not be possible for you. In such cases, it’s a cardboard that may come to your rescue.
If you haven’t already got a few old boxes lying around, you may simply buy a new one that hardly costs anything when compared to the other two options mentioned above.
Similarly, it may be an ideal option when you’re sure about not using the office chair for a long time, and hence it may not make sense to waste money on a chair mat or an area rug.
However, do keep in mind that this option comes with its own set of disadvantages. First things first, it isn’t very attractive. But while not many may mind that, even the level of protection it offers is questionable, so you may have to make sure from time to time that it’s indeed turning out to be effective.
Finally, depending on the cardboard’s surfaces, it may not be very comfortable to move your chair around, which can obviously be quite annoying at times especially if you tend to do it frequently.
A final word
While you can consider using a cardboard temporarily, you may want to go for either of an area rug or a chair mat for long term use.
